Adjustments

The adjustability of the LAP-BAND System is one of the band's most attractive features. Adjustability allows you and your Aftercare Provider to find the right level of restriction for YOU!

Unlike other weight-loss surgeries, the band's adjustability allows you to change how much food you can eat. You can limit the volume of food your stomach pouch can hold for the duration of your weight-loss progress, then increase it for pregnancy or illness. All adjustments to the band can be made without surgery, simply by inflating or deflating the band.

When first placing the gastric band, your surgeon leaves it empty. This lets you get acquainted with your band during the first few weeks after surgery. It also allows healing to occur around the new band site.

To remain effective, however, your gastric band will need to be adjusted periodically. Adjustments, commonly called "fills", are done by trained medical professionals who change the size of your stoma by injecting or removing saline from the self-sealing access port. This port is located just under your skin. This is done with a special fine needle. You may feel a pricking sensation when this is done. The feeling is similar to what you experience when donating blood.

To get the best results, you may need more than one adjustment. Each one will range from 1/2 cc to 2 cc of fluid. The most the band can hold is 4 cc. The exact amount of fluid required to make the stoma the right size is unique for each person.

At some point, fluoroscopy may be needed to locate the access port, perform an adjustment, or verify the condition and placement of your gastric band.

Only a trained medical professional should adjust your band. Never let an untrained clinician do it. Never let a non-medical person do it. And never, NEVER try to adjust your own band. Adverse reactions can occur when an untrained individual attempts to adjust a gastric band that could cause irreversible damage to your band and/or your health!

When will I need my first adjustment?

The need for band adjustments varies from person to person, but most individuals need their first band adjustment 4-6 weeks after surgery. You and your Fill Centers USA Aftercare Provider will decide when the time is right for you.

How long will it take to have a LAP-BAND Adjustment?

The adjustment usually takes only a few minutes to complete and you will be able to leave your Aftercare Provider's facility immediately. You will be instructed to go back on a liquid diet for a few days following the adjustment in order to give your stomach some time to adapt to the restriction change.

What is the Optimal Fill Level?

  • You are losing @ 2+ lbs/week
  • Able to tolerate most foods
  • Eating small normal meals comfortably
  • No problems with liquids
  • No adverse symptoms

However, getting a fill does not mean that the pounds will magically disappear. You are still responsible for your diet and level of fitness. Be sure to use your Lifestyle Guide and your online HouseCall for help with nutritional information and recipes, exercise and fitness guidance and your other gastric band lifestyle needs.

How many gastric band adjustments will I need?

Each person is different. The number of adjustments you need cannot be predicted prior to your surgery. The average number of adjustments in the first year ranges from three to five; however, there are some patients who only need one adjustment. Other patients may require later adjustments , even many years later, as circumstances dictate. Much of it depends upon your individual reaction to the band and the degree and speed of weight loss desired. You should always stay in close communication with your Aftercare Provider.
